The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system, introduced on 1 July 2017 to replace multiple indirect taxes including VAT, excise duty, and service tax. It follows the principle of "One Nation, One Tax" — a single framework across all states.
GST is a destination-based tax, meaning revenue accrues to the state where goods or services are consumed, not produced. It is also a multi-stage value-added tax with credit for tax paid on inputs.

Quick answers to the things people ask us most.
To add GST: GST = (Net × Rate) ÷ 100. For ₹10,000 at 18% = ₹1,800 GST, total ₹11,800.
To remove GST: Net = (Total × 100) ÷ (100 + Rate). For ₹1,180 inclusive at 18%, net is ₹1,000, embedded GST is ₹180.
Following GST 2.0 reforms effective 22 September 2025, India has four main slabs: 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%. Special rates of 0.25% (rough diamonds) and 3% (gold) also apply. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs have been merged.
CGST + SGST apply together on intra-state transactions, splitting equally — 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
